Learn a song
Pick a real song you love and get it under your fingers, start to finish.
Learn a song
This is a project course: you pick one real song you love and learn to play it all the way through. Not a riff from it, not the easy half, the whole thing.
Your tutor has been collecting Earth songs for a while now and is endlessly curious about which one you’ll choose. You’ll start by mapping the song, sections, chords, the two bars that fight back, then drill the hard parts with practice loops, and finally stitch it together and play it along with the recording. At the end you’ll record a take and hear yourself play a song you chose, start to finish.
Any song works: strummy and acoustic, heavy and loud, or somewhere in between. If you’re not sure what to pick, your tutor will suggest a few that fit what you said you wanted to play.
Exercises
- Exercise 00Interview✓Tell your tutor which song you want to learn, how deep you want to go, and how you like to learn.
- Exercise 01Map the song✓Break your song into sections, find the chords in each one, and write a one-page map of the whole thing.
- Exercise 02Loop the hard parts✓Use practice loops, small, slow, and repeated, to turn your song's two hardest spots into its most reliable ones.
- Exercise 03Play it through✓Assemble the sections, play along with the recording without stopping, and record a phone take to hear how far you've come.
